I recently photographed the wedding of Natalie & Michael at the incredible Holmes Mill in Clitheroe. What an amazing day of love, life and Scouse humour!

It’s a unique venue that ticks all the modern wedding trends. Rustic, urban, industrial, shabby chic, Holmes Mill has it all going on! Natalie & Michael have impeccable taste and their style is pure wedding inspiration.

The Wedding Day at Holmes Mill
The bride & groom planned their whole wedding day to be held at Holmes Mill. The venue caters for the full day and is licensed for wedding ceremonies. This means less stress, as once the guests have arrived & parked up, it’s celebration time from morning to night!
Natalie prepared for the wedding day in the bridal penthouse, which was easily big enough for her, her Mum and all the bridesmaids. The mother of the bride had the steamer going, making sure all the dresses were perfectly smooth, leading to great scene-setting photos. Natalie wore a long bohemian-style wedding dress with a flower crown by the award-winning Flower Shop in Clitheroe. Doesn’t she look amazing?
It was a bright, hot day and Natalie had a strange knack of acquiring battery-powered mini-fans to cool off throughout the celebrations. I’m not sure where they kept coming from but they were never far away!
It was beautiful ceremony in the Function Hall. This room was all textured walls, exposed beams and that period character you’d expect from a building with such history. Natalie & Michael said their vows and there were many happy tears! After the ceremony, the guests moved downstairs to the Engine Room for drinks and canapes.
Holmes Mill also has a vibrant outdoor area, and many of the wedding guests chose to soak up a bit of sunshine and enjoy a few cocktails in the fresh air. By sheer luck, it was also a local choir’s day out and they struck up a few songs while we listened in amazement! It’s definitely a wedding venue with a difference. Natalie & Michael are Scousers, and chose Holmes Mill for something completely different to anywhere they’d been before. It was strange for me to be up in deepest Lancashire, and still be surrounded by my fellow Scousers all ready to party! 🙂
Your Holmes Mill Wedding Photographer
From a photographer’s point of view, Holmes Mill is a joy to photograph in. The rustic, weathered surfaces add so much texture and interest to the photos. The light in the Engine Room during the drinks reception is absolutely amazing. I took a few minutes before the wedding breakfast to capture some very cool, contemporary portraits of the bride & groom. The shafts of natural light against the industrial shadows were better than anything I could have lit artificially. I’m always on the look out for an interesting shot and I love mixing natural, relaxed documentary photos with standout killer shots.
Although I bring a huge amount of lighting equipment to every wedding (just in case), I appreciate the ease and beauty of natural light when it is available. Holmes Mill has bags of gorgeous light, if you know where to look.
A Unique Lancashire Wedding Venue
From the amazing light and shadow in the Boiler Room to the industrial chic of the Function Room, Holmes Mill is completely unique. I’ve never been to a venue with such possibility for cool shots.
The decor and design are definitely industrial but the atmosphere is warm and welcoming.
With such diversity in one building, Holmes Mill wedding photography is a pleasure to undertake. It also has one of the longest bars in Britain, so I’m planning a non-wedding visit here myself one day!
