Do you like real moments, stunning light, joyful wedding guests and a booming dancefloor?
You’ve come to the right place!
Following on from my recent award-winning images from Amy & Paul’s Great John Street Hotel Wedding, I wanted to share the full story of their amazing day.
It’s always an honour to collect awards for individual images but most importantly, it’s about telling a creative, compelling, beautiful (documentary photography can be pretty, change my mind) authentic story from beginning to end.

I’m a fully house-trained professional wedding photographer with experience shooting at this ultra cool Manchester city hotel. This is a wedding venue with all the trendy chops.
Make no mistake, this is a fabulous location for a city wedding.
Great John Street Hotel is a boutique hotel located in the heart of Manchester. A converted Victorian school, GJS features stunning period features fused with elegant, contemporary flourishes. The wonderful suites where brides & grooms can prepare for their wedding day boast floor-to-ceiling windows, chandeliers, cast-iron fireplaces and timber flooring. Great John Street oozes sophistication and is so impressive as an exclusive wedding venue!
The Wedding Day at Great John Street Street Hotel
Amy & Paul enjoyed a day of love, happiness, tears, laughter and shenanigans at Manchester’s coolest wedding venue. It began with bridal preparations in one of the hotel suites; a gorgeous space, check out that light when Amy’s wedding veil was being fitted! I love the quality of light as it seeps through the windows, it’s a pleasure to photograph.
There were a few tears when Amy received her gifts from Paul; I think he’d included every card and letter she’d ever sent him, it was lovely!
The bridal party and guests then jumped onto red vintage buses for the short trip to the church, where our nervous groom and his groomsmen waited our arrival.
Everyone said the right words, nobody fainted- married!
Back to Great John Street for PARTY TIME 🙂
Outdoor Speeches on the Hotel Balcony
Great John Street Hotel has an awesome south-facing rooftop Lounge where Amy & Paul’s guests congregated for the after dinner speeches. I must admit, it was a LITTLE chilly up there! Luckily, the hotel has oodles of patio heaters to keep everyone warm & cosy.
It’s quite challenging shooting speeches after dark, especially outdoors. There are a few tricks to working in really dark conditions but after 200 weddings in the UK, I’m well used to the gloom! I’ve even photographed down a cave (coming soon to the blog!) so a trendy townhouse hotel wasn’t too bad really.
The speeches wrapped up, and it was back downstairs for the first dance. With an amazing group of wedding guests, the dancefloor soon became absolute mayhem. I loved it!
